Los Angeles Dodgers at New York Mets
The Los Angeles Dodgers hope that Andre Ethier will be able to resume his quest for a 30-game hitting streak this evening when they open a three-game series against the New York Mets at Citi Field.
Ethier would have been instrumental in Wednesday's 5-1 loss to the Cubs, but he did not get to play at all due to an elbow inflammation. Because he did not appear at all in the game, his 29-game hitting streak remains the same and he hopes to return to action tonight.
"It's just sore. It's been sore the last couple of days," Ethier said. "It's more tender on the throwing than hitting. [Tuesday night] it was sore after the game."
Ethier is hitting .387 (43-for-111) over his hitting streak, which has tied Zack Wheat (1916) for the second-longest in club history. Willie Davis owns the club mark with a 31-game run during the 1969 season.
The last player to have a 30 game hitting streak has been Ryan Zimmerman who played for Washington. He managed this record from April 8 to May 12 2009. Now other names are fighting for the distinction.
The Dodgers have called Hiroki Kuroda today, who is 3-2 with a 3.10 earned run average through six starts.
The 36-year-old Kuroda has made five career starts versus the Mets, going 1-3 with a 6.18 ERA. He has struggled in his career against both Jose Reyes (5- for-12, 1 RBI) and David Wright (6-for-12, 3 RBI).
Reyes and Carlos Beltran helped the Mets win over the Giants with a 5-2 score. Reyes connected on a two-run triple and Beltran smashed a two-run homer.
"It feels great. Every time you contribute to help the team win offensively or defensively it's a great feeling. Most importantly when you win," said Beltran.
The Mets took four of seven from the Dodgers last season, winning all three games at Citi Field.
